“My next target is to win the gold in the Commonwealth, Asian and the 2020 Olympic games. And I promise that I won’t leave it till I win a gold.”
~ Dipa Karmakar
The star performer of Indian contingent, someone who really stood for the country, the young gymnast from Tripura, really did India proud in the 2016 Olympic games. Registering her name in the hearts of India, she made us proud. With her humble attitude, confident demeanor and constant progress, we can assertively say, Deepa Karmakar is a great sportsperson in making.
A debut year for the 22 year old Dipa in the Olympics, she surpassed the expectations of the world as the favorites were already enlisted and predictions were made. Even though she missed the bronze just by 0.150 points, she still won many hearts. She came fourth with a total of 15.006 whereas Giulia Steingruber from Switzerland scored 15.216, and our star lady missed it just by a few points. The Indian Gymnast was found mentioning that it might sound little, but in our field this is where all the difference lies. Indeed Dipa, we agree with you, however, we are with you for it is just the beginning.
In an interview with India Today, Dipa’s coach said,
“Whatever I taught her, she did her best. But a coach hopes for a medal and if there had been a medal, it would be have been very good. Although Dipa performed well.”
And Dipa was seen crying in the background. These tears, we believe, are a warning for all the other world gymnasts that India will be back with a bang!
Attempting one of the most difficult vaults performed in the women’s gymnastics, Dipa is also the only five women who have successfully landed the Produnova. It is believed that India’s position in world sport’s scenario is going to improve as the doors for female gymnasts open up with Dipa’s entry and achievement. For those of us who do not know, Dipa is the first female Indian Gymnast ever, to compete in the Olympics.
There is more to Dipa’s story. Dipa has previously won Bronze at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. She also won a bronze medal at the Asian Gymnastics Championships and finished fifth at the 2015 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships.
The icing on the cake is Dipa’s irrevocable commitment to artistic gymnastics and her future. The god fearing Indian girl promises to do her best, but also reposes a great deal of faith in the almighty. Her goals are sky high and why not? She has all the reason and the time to set high goals.
