Fitness is priority
The Andhra Pradesh lad who got to the first ranking, is currently focused on fitness.
“The biggest challenge for me these days is to maintain my fitness. I actually have issues with both my ankles. After the Olympics, I had issues with my right ankle but last year I hurt my left ankle at the nationals. So, I have to be more careful before I plan my tournament. So staying away from injury that is what I am trying to do”
Currently, Srikanth is India’s highest ranked individual player at number four. Last year he had a tremendous form, clinching four super series titles. Namely the French Open, Denmark Open, Australian Open and Indonesian Open.
With Asian games in sight, Srikanth is aiming nothing less than gold. He stressed that the super series titles are also on the list but a four year wait can’t be afforded.
“But all other super series, of course, I do want to win but they happen every year, so even if I lose in the semi-finals I know there will again via Super 1000 or Super 750 tournament in a week or a month. So now I am going for Malaysia but my focus is to stay fit for Asian Games because if I missed out now then I will have to wait for another four years”
As far as his current schedule goes, he is playing three successive tournaments. In Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand and skipping Singapore Open. After a break the World Championship is on the marks. And then the Asian Games after a break and training.
