One has surely not received what they expected. A day slated for matches of big names failed to keep up with the folks. In the first match Serbia overshadowed Costa Rica. And Brazil where restricted to 1-1 and had to share the points with Switzerland. Meanwhile, Mexico did the first slaying and defeated Germany by 0-1. The 2018 has World Cup kept up with its trend of the top champions teams finding it hard to get their feet. Now following, is short digest of the games played yesterday.
A narrow win
Serbia are off the mark in the World Cup with a narrow win over Costa Rica in their opening Group E contest. Costa Rica were lacking in the final third segment and didn’t appear to have an answer for the threat of the Serbs. They now have a huge challenge ahead of them to avoid going out of the tournament in the group stage. Aleksandar Kolarov’s super strike from a free-kick was the difference between the two sides. The goal from the Serbia skipper was majestic and enough to win any football match. The margin of win would have been more than 0-1, had Aleksandar Mitrovic capitalised his two golden opportunities. However, they still have the three points and have momentum to take forward into the rest of their group games.
A disheartening outing
France, Argentina and Germany have all struggled in their opening games and there is still two games left for Brazil to find the groove. The draw is a cracking result for Switzerland and that will give them so much confidence as they try to qualify for the knockout stages.
Brazil fail to deliver the goods as we witness yet another shock at the World Cup in Russia. Tite’s men made a solid start inside the first 25 minutes and they looked like they could run away with it once Coutinho scored. However, Switzerland worked tremendously hard to find an equalizer and Zuber’s header was unstoppable. The Rostov Arena surely belonged to the Swiss yesterday.
Continuing their tradition
This is a huge result for Mexico and a scoreline that will rock the World Cup Mexico have advanced to the knock-out stages of the World Cup in each of the last six tournaments and are now in the driving seat after this result. Germany will have to improve for their games against Sweden and South Korea. At the same time, will be wary of the fact that the last two defending champions have exited the competition at the group stage. Hirving Lozano’s goal proved to be the difference but the entire performance from Mexico was superb. Germany simply couldn’t cope with their counter-attacks and didn’t really do enough to break through a resilient defensive line.
By and large, the show has left the hopes of champions plundering as they try to look up after such non-appealing results.
