Bloating or flatulence has been a common cause of concern for almost travelers, especially those possessing ‘Vata’ (Air & Space) properties as per Ayurvedic terminologies. Jeans pressing in the belly, face swelling up, rings pressing the fingers, all these and many more effects of bloating can bust the good mood & lead to anxiety. Our concern more than anything is, what will happen to all the beach body plans or the tight shirts & dresses we have packed? The procedure of Bloating starts the moment we step foot on our vacations. Why?
Because a relaxed mood calls for fatty food with copious amount of salts, preservatives and chemicals rich food choices.
Even before we buckle up in our seats, we start feeding our bodies with food substances we would have avoided otherwise. A bag of chips, fries, burgers, and coffee, carbonated drinks, all this and more are a stepping-stone to the land of flatulence.
Furthermore, as the plane takes off, the 30,000 feet distance between ground and the digestive system slows our digestion down considerably.
Therefore, all the greasy fast food we have put into the body or are going to put into the mouth is only going to be lying unprocessed in the stomach due to sluggish digestive system causing more gas. Salt sucks the water in the body, causing water retention.
Hydration over anything else
We cannot emphasize enough on this step. It is not a lesser-known fact that Water is Elixir of life, but when you are travelling, we would say, it is the only drinkable product for those looking to avoid bloating. Coffee & alcohol lead to dehydration whereas carbonated drinks add gas to the body all the more. Throw as many bottles of H2O into your system as well and make sure you are following it consistently throughout the day.
Sugar & salt are your foes
This is a thumb rule no matter where you go and what you do, if you are avoiding bloating and a rolly-polly version of the self. Lay off food items with naturally high in sugar content, which can be found in sorbitol, xylitol, erythritol, mannitol etc. Granola bars, chewing gums, sugar free ice-creams and all the other food containing sugar alcohols, as the digestive system finds it difficult to break it down and they wreck mayhem on the gastrointestinal tract. Salt, on the other hand, is a white evil in its purest form as it leads to water retention & dehydration.
Say no to raw these natural items
This might seem like a shocker, but it is indeed true. Not all raw vegetables and fruits are for those who want to keep bloating at bay. The gassy or cruciferous vegetables like cauliflower, broccoli, Brussels etc. should be avoided as they might make you feel fluffy as a pufferfish. The gas content in these vegetables bloats you up further therefore opt for vegetables like cucumber, zucchini, lettuce, spinach, peppers or eggplant. Also, fruits like peaches, cherries, mangoes or grapes are great, but due to the high sugar alcohols in them, they can be a bad choice, if you are looking to debloat. Try watermelon, strawberries, cranberries, oranges etc.
Pack Well Beforehand
This step is pivotal as planning beforehand can go a long way. You can simply add healthier options before hand so that at the end moment you do not end up making a bad choice. Opt for nuts, toasted in olive oil and kosher salt, roasted chickpeas, almonds or homemade energy bars etc. These options are tasty and help you stay on your strict routine.
Time Zone Blues
There is no cure for this one and only sleep in real time can let you overcome this step. Our body clock is set as per a time zone and once the circadian rhythm is disturbed, it will take a while to set back. We are eating when we should be sleeping and sleeping when we should be eating, therefore, relax and unwind for a day and try not to sleep immediately once you reach the hotel rather sleep when the city sleeps.
These small tips can go a long way.
