A Competition between 4 Football teams from three federations around the world, this tournament kicked off on June 1st and will continue till June 10th, the day for the Finals. Ironically, touted as a low profile at the outset, it has gained momentum lately. In fact, it relevantly transformed ‘the less to more’. The Indian crowd went in large numbers to support national football team against Kenya. With two wins and a final spot, India has now become favorites. New Zealand, Chinese Taipei, Kenya are the other teams competing in this.
The Next Encounter
India takes on New Zealand on Thursday. It is an important game for New Zealand. To keep its finals hope alive, it needs to win this match. New Zealand has sent its ‘test team’ as many of its players are debutante. The NZ, had to put much efforts to win against Chinese Taipei, on the other hand, India crushed them with much ease. A goal by Myer Bevan in 36th minute finally took the side to victory. The fairly young visiting team has maximum players under the age of 23. The contest would not be easy for visitors as hosts are seemingly in no mood to relent.
India and the oozing confidence
Coming from the victory in last match and a tremendous crowd support after an appeal from the Indian skipper, Sunil Chhetri. The side is oozing with confidence and there is no stopping. On 4th June, Kenya was defeated by 3 goals to zero by a combined team effort. After the winning show in Mumbai, Chhetri said
“We promise you if that’s the kind of support we get every time we play for country we will give our lives on the pitch”. It would also be the 50th appearance of Jeje Lalpekhlua for the national side.
Fitter side has an edge
Football is a game that no doubt puts player under rigorous physical pressure. With requirements to kick the ball, to dribble it and to cover a vast area, it’s fitness aspect can not be ignored. Players on field have their assigned place but of course that does not fixes them. At times they need to extend out of their zone to net the ball. A play of 90 minutes, it demands players to have strength and endurance equally alike. Teams at par mostly rely on extra time as the decider. Hence,a team more fitter gets an edge.
The intercontinental cup has proved to be fairly successful one. Though, it has not yet ended but India is getting a fresh aroma as far as Football is concerned. Indian team led by a hard working persona, Sunil Chhetri is getting the much required ‘Fan-Love’. These positives are very noteworthy and give us clear indication about the future of football in the country. With a spot sealed in the finals, Indian team may give young players a chance but all things considered, the team goes in the match as favourites.
