As tension was spurring in the minds of Argentina fans, Tuesday gave them some relief. Argentina won with a score line of 2-1, beating Nigeria in their last group stage match. Doing them a favour, Croatia defeated Iceland to ensure Messi and Co. are in the knockouts. The stadium and fans all around the world had a roller-coaster of emotion, as the winning goal came very late. Even Diego Maradona felt the chill in the stadium. Here is a quick recap of the match happened yesterday.
Goals at extremities
The goals scored in the match by Argentina were too stretched. The much talked about Barcelona star, gave Argentina 1-0 lead in 14th minute. The lead stayed for quite a time when in the 56th minute, Victor Moses netted the ball for Nigeria. Doing many changes and shifting players, Sampaoli seemed desperate. Much to the delight of Argentina fans, M. Rojo guided the ball for goal with his right foot in the 86th minute. The celebrations were on as with a few minutes remaining, the lead seemed good. Messi was handed over a yellow card in the 94th minute for a deliberate attempt of wasting time. But all in all, the result is convincing and Argentina meat France in the knockouts
Much required Croatian help
Before the start of Argentina vs Nigeria match at 11:30 IST, Iceland was out of the race. Taking a 2-1 defeat by the hands of Croatia, making roads clear for Argentina. Had Iceland won the game, there was no chance for Sampaoli’s men to proceed. Earlier, after the 3-0 win over Argentina, Croatian captain had assured the world of defeating Iceland for ease of Argentina. The Bravehearts Iceland would be proud of their Russia outing. Apart from holding Argentina they also brought them near elimination. Such an effort by a small country is very admiring.
All things considered, the campaign of Argentina is still below their capabilities. The runners-up of the previous edition would look up to make best of the chances, as it defines the fate of their Skipper Lionel Messi.
