Amid the football fever, two Indian tennis players have qualified for the men’s doubles event of Wimbledon. The doubles tennis players, Vishnu Vardhan and Sriram Balaji booked their tickets for the Grand Slam on Wednesday. The duo has been together since some time and now hopes to get it big for India. Currently, Vishnuvardhan is ranked 101 while Balaji is at 110 in men’s doubles ranking. Turning some heads towards themselves now, we take a look at the journey of the players from Tamilnadu to London.
Perseverance was the key
The result as this was not easy for them to achieve. In the circuit for quite some time now, proper planning and perseverance helped them along. Over the last one year, the duo has been winning titles but some setbacks prevented them from scaling up. Vishnu realised that to take it further from here, they need to have a sponsorship, for which they arranged some social media campaigns and fetched some money. The team has now received a boost with the Hyderabad-based Mytrah Energy deciding to back them, and also the help from Bhupathi and Rohan Bopanna.
Aware of shortcomings
The best thing which you can do to excel is to know about your weaknesses. Proving this quite true, they are fully aware of their shortcomings. In an interview, Balaji said
“We know we are not a complete package and there are areas we have to prove but over the last year we were able to slowly improve by focusing on a particular set of skills and reviewing it periodically.”
The constant support from ace players and coaches such as Balachandran Manikandan has done a lot of support. Wimbledon is the only event that has a qualifying event for doubles, capitalising on this chance the duo worked hard.
While not setting big targets, the pair hopes that being unknown on the tour, they could do some damage to the players ranked higher than them. As Wimbledon kicks off next week, we hope very best for them and look forward to more occurrences as this.
